The Taj Mahal is a 58 m high and 56 m wide mausoleum (grave Mosque), which was in Agra in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on a 100 m × 100 m large marble platform erected. It has also been applied to him a 18-acre garden, in the center is an oblong pool of water. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of him in 1631 his deceased wife Mumtaz Mahal main (Arjumand Bano Begum) built.

History of Taj Mahal

The construction of the Taj Mahal was begun soon after the death of Mumtaz Mahal in 1631 and 1648 completed. have involved over 20,000 craftsmen from all over South and Central Asia, and various architects, including Ahmad Lahori and from Badakhshan (today Afghanistan ) originally Persian Abu Fazel. The Persian architecture goes back to him, he skilfully fused them with Indian elements into a harmonious masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture.

A common legend states that originally had a similar structure made of black marble mausoleum for Shah Jahan himself as on the other side of the river Yamuna was planned, but it was not realized; are ongoing excavations (well visible on satellite images). It has been found that the black Taj Mahal has never existed. On the opposite side of the "white" Taj Mahal was a park with a large pool of water. The white Taj Mahal has been mirrored in the pool and left it in the water appear black (Source: The Realm of Warriors - The Indian moguls, directed by Sally Aitken). Shah Jahan was deposed by his son before Muhammad Aurangzeb Alamgir and spent the rest of his life as a prisoner. In 1666 he was buried next to his wife. His grave destroyed the symmetry of the building, which can be considered as proof that he intended to build his own tomb, especially as he, in order to preserve this symmetry to build a rest house on the eastern side of the building was that the mosque on the western side is quite similar. Furthermore, there is the Taj Mahal in the center of the landscaped garden, as usual for Persian tombs, but on the northern border, suggesting also that another tomb was planned on the opposite bank, as the two from the river separate buildings would turn in now the center of the garden area was, as (garden divided into four quadrants, the four Wasserkänale from a central building, which will constitute the throne of God to flow into the four directions) to the Persian understanding from heaven as of a Charbagh equivalent. Humayun's Tomb in Delhi, for example, remains true to this concept, where the mausoleum is located entirely in the middle of a Charbagh.

The Taj Mahal is made of building materials that were brought from all over India and Asia. Over 1,000 elephants were used for transportation, 28 different types of precious and semi-precious stones were inserted into the marble.

The four arranged around the main building minarets are slightly inclined so that they fall in the event of an earthquake away from the main building. As Mecca is seen from there in the West, is in this direction a mosque. Symmetrically located with the same floor plan in the east a guest house.

According to another legend, the British rulers were planning under the governor Lord William Bentinck in the 19 Century, the much neglected buildings for sale piecemeal at auction in England. There are also no evidence for this story. According to Bentinck's biographer John Rosselli this story arose rather from that was quite tempted to sell parts of the Red Fort and other archaeological finds from Agra profitable.
