2000 Tourists, Trapped in Slopes of Mount Everest

Some 2,000 foreign tourists and their guide five days trapped in a small village at an altitude of 2,800 metersabove the slopes of a hill near Mount Everest in bad weather  Nepalese army helicopters were deployed to evacuate and rescue the tourists on Friday (11/19/2010).

"They are trapped in Lukia, the entrance to Mt Everest in eastern Nepal due to bad weather so that airlines cancel flights to these remote areas," the official said on Friday.

Tens of thousands of climbers come to Solukhumbu region in eastern Nepal, a place that every year a haven for those who go to The Peak of Mount Everest.

Many of them begin the journey from the windy village of Lukla, where a small airfield in the mountains steep.

Weather officials in Kathmandu said the region is viewed as a region with low cloud and strong winds so the flights with smaller aircraft was difficult and risky.

"Flight with a private helicopter is very expensive and unaffordable cost of the climbers," said Mahendra Singh Thapa, senior officials climber Agency Association of Nepal.

Bikram Neupane, Head of the Himalayan Rescue Association, Nepal, said that all tourist climbers safe and not in danger.

"They did not get a flight home to Kathmandu due to bad weather," said Neupane told Reuters.
