Mamallapuram (Mamallapuram) Mahabalipuram or (Makābalipuram) is a village 60 km south of Chennai (Madras) on the Coromandel coast in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Here you will find one of the most important archaeological sites in South India. The temple of Mamallapuram is since 1985 a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The names are equally common forms of Mamallapuram. Mamallapuram is named after the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I (630-668), which is the nickname Mahamalla (great wrestler) was wearing. The name is a corruption of Mahabalipuram, which refers to the mythical demon Mahabali reference.
